Green Organizers

As organizers of the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, we recognize the importance of reducing our carbon footprint. We are motivated and determined to become greener every year, and with your help we know the Festival can achieve this goal. Check out our green initiatives—feel free to steal some of our ideas—and let us know yours!

Here's what we are doing at the Harvest Office
and Store...

  • We've challenged each of our committees to think green
  • Recycling beer caps, beer bottles, plastic cups
  • To conduct paperless meetings, we use an LCD projector to display agendas and documents
  • An energy audit will be performed in office to identify more greening opportunities
  • And we're printing less postcards, programs and posters. Marketing the Festival through mediums such as e-newsletters and Facebook
  • Reducing paper usage by reusing one-sided printed paper scraps, using e-mail and our paperless fax as well as our online collaborative workspace to share documents
  • New energy efficient multi-function copier and color printer
  • Using reusable cups and mugs in the office
  • Reusing office supplies such as binders, dividers, file folders, etc.
  • Combining errands which encourages walking to work and meetings
  • Where possible, reducing packaging on incoming and outgoing items
  • Eliminating plastic bags at Harvest Central; replacing with paper bags and encouraging patrons to bring their own bags
  • Replacing store and office light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs
  • Reducing individual tags on retail items
  • Requesting that our suppliers reduce packaging where possible
  • Volunteers and organizers will encourage people in vehicles not to idle
  • Improving our inventory of supplies to reduce waste
  • Examining reusable options for one-time use supplies (such as rechargeable batteries)
  • Planting trees to help offset our greenhouse gas emissions

Here's what we are doing at the Festival

  • Recycling, recycling, recycling.... Our printed materials are on post-consumer recycled paper!
  • Outfitting our hard working volunteers with 100% organic cotton tees
  • We've created a new Park & Ride program for our volunteers
  • We provide musician shuttles for all our visiting performers
  • We have a Green Event: Sponsored by Jacques Whitford. The Aliant Mojo Tent on Saturday night, September 13th will be our first Carbon Neutral Event!
  • Composting biodegradable cups used on Saturday night in the Mojo Tent
  • Purchased Cup Suckers—tubes that attach to garbage bins for efficient storage and recycling of cups. Cup Suckers reduces the amount of plastic garbage bags the Festival uses to help reduce our carbon footprint
  • Using electronic signage to recognize our Sponsors during the Festival week to eliminate the waste created by using traditional "one-off" signage
  • Providing recycling bins for vendors
